Pros: Cheap, Good for all ages of chicks
Cons: Not GMO free or organic, easyly wasted, crumbles are a bit big
I don't like the fact that Purina won't make a layer feed for ducks or a starter feed for turkeys but i have been using the medicated chick crumbles for about 8-10 weeks since my grams old flocks a few years ago but the younger day old chicks seem to have issues eating a crumble whole. While the older chicks seem to think it's fun to knock their feeders over and this stuff looks just to much like the dirt to try and save. It sucks that the economy is so bad i just to be able to buy a 50lb bag for $12 but now i would be lucky to get away with paying $16. The older chicks haven't been eating as much feed as much as they had been(i'm guessing because of the heat). But as far as i know the feed isn't outdated and i will feed this to them until i can afford something better.

Pros: Cheap feed
Cons: Ingredients are horrible compared to other feeds locally milled.
I phoned the company and gave the rep the # on the bag and it was 6 months past the pull date. It is most often old! My bag went in the garbage!

The organic lines I use are King Feeds, Modesto Milling, and Bar Ale.

ok I know Modesto feeds. Can check out King. Is Bar Ale liquid or a crumble?
Thanks,
Karen

Bar Ale is a mill in Williams, California. They make organic chick crumbles, layer crumbles and a 16% organic high energy layer in a mini-pellet. Modesto and King have the better ingredients.

I believe that by definition medicated feeds are not organic.

I agree with Michael. My hens refused to eat this garbage it smelled terrible. So I phoned the company and gave the rep the # on the bag and it was 6 months past the pull date. It is most often old and the ingredients are not very nutritious compared to other feeds. I also feed Modesto Mill and King. Thank you Michael...

Mine have always been fresh. Product being outdated is the fault of the seller, not the producer. The people who work at the store where you bought it should have pulled the old stock.

The local Rep from Purina should make sure his stores are not selling old feed. So I would say it's partly Purina's fault, only they know what the # means. Maybe they should put an actual date that we can all read--not some code #. Purina just had another re-call on their feed not sure which feed or area but it was recently posted on this site. I just don't trust them anymore.

When looking for feed for my new chicks just reading the word 'medicated' on the bag instantly caused me to turn away from Purina. Even though I feed Purina feeds to my horses, I most certainly won't to my chickens.

Agree. It should be GMO free but purina is a big sponsor of GMO. They want us to eat poison.

The date code is actually super easy to read. My bag was less than 2 weeks old from date of production when i purchased it.

Awesome! Maybe you'd like to share with others how to read their date code?

First number is the last digit of the year. After that is three letters, that's the first three letters of the month. Next is a two digit number. That is the date it was produced. 4OCT08 Would be October 08 2014. On most all dry feeds you have 6 months before it is considered out of date.some are longer some are less.

Oh for the record Nutrena is the one to look out for. With Nutrena a lot of their feeds are first two numbers are the plant where the feed was produced and the next three numbers are the Julian Date Code. Now that's a pain.

I didn't have any such code as easy to read as 4OCT08 LOL. I had a large amount of numbers and a few letters with no rhyme or reason, must be the pain you mentioned. I thank you for your comment but I'll stick with the local mills Modesto and or King Feeds, they smell so fresh and the birds love them.

Purina makes a starter feed for Turkeys. Call the 800 number and inquire about the medicated Purina Starter tag number 5419
